It's not as much of a problem as it used to be, but in leveling content especially, if the tank doesn't get the first hit off, there's a good chance they'll be struggling for hate for the rest of the encounter. Correct, you need to have no target in order to auto-target. Basically, you have three options to rectify this. Rapidly switch between targets while your GCD timer is rolling.
